It all starts with eating a little more than planned at the event but that isn’t where it ends.

You eat a little too much then feel bloated and disappointed the next morning.  You beat yourself up for “losing control”. You decide to “make up for it” by eating super strict from now on.  Before the day ends, you have eaten something that you didn’t plan to eat and start the entire indulgence, disappointment, and recommitment cycle all over again.  Can you relate?

Resist The Urge to Over Restrict

So many times, I have gone to a holiday event and eaten way more than I intended.  Then I allowed the discomfort, bloating, and guilt to lure me into over restricting.  Over restricting is a knee jerk reaction to your indulgence that only sets you up for bigger indulgences down the line.

Resisting the urge to over restrict is important because the more you over restrict, the more deprived you feel.  The more deprived you feel, the more likely you are to overindulge again.

Stay active- DAILY!

Skipping exercise just because you’re over eating, is really buying into l the all or nothing way of doing things.  If you are after significant, sustainable weight loss, you have to lose the all or nothing mindset.  Even when you feel like the freight train of holiday weight gain is moving too quickly down the tracks to be stopped, stay active.

Continuing with your regular exercise is a way to keep a foot in the door.  Also your activity can help you with getting rid of some of the water retention and the bloating from overindulging.

Get rid of the bloating between events.

Back in my competitive figure days, I would “lose control” quite a bit when it came to events.  My friend Ana and I used to say to each other “OK.  I am getting back on my program before this weight makes a home on my body”. Intuitively we knew that we didn’t really gain weight from one night’s eating.

If you overeat one weekend or at an event, you may step on the scale and see a weight gain the next morning.  Your jeans that fit two days before may not fit. But unless you ate a week’s worth of calories,  it’s highly unlikely that the weight change is truly fat gain.  What you have instead is water retention and bloating- something that can be eliminated.  It doesn’t have to “make a home” on your body.

Rather than get down on yourself and think that you’ve gained five real pounds of fat, go ahead and get rid of that bloating in between events.

When you don’t eliminate bloating between events, you feel stuffed in your clothes and miserable.  When you feel miserable and disappointed in your behavior, you’re more likely to continue down that same path with your eating.

Getting rid of the bloating between events prevents the compound effect that occurs when the bloating from last weekend turns into true weight gain because of the choices you make in the days after.
