Can we just be honest and admit that we want weight loss to be easy.  I don’t mean that we don’t want to do what it takes or that we want to sleep our way to a fierce figure.  I just mean that we don’t want to have to think about food and exercise all day in order to get and stay fit.  We want to intuitively know what to do in an ideal situation and when life gets crazy the same way we intuitively know (without the need to ponder or plan) to duck if something is flying toward our head.

We want it to be AUTOMATIC AND EFFORTLESS so that we can spend our energy and mental space on our family, relationships, and career… and that’s OK!

The one thing that keeps us from achieving effortless weight loss is our obsession with the rules.  I can remember stressing out over things as insignificant as how much ketchup I put on my turkey burger.  Get this… the burger had no bun.  I wasn’t eating fries to go along with it and I was stressed over KETCHUP!  That is insane but it was my existence for so long because I was a good little rule follower.  I, like so many women who want to get in shape, would search for the “perfect plan” and do my best to follow it exactly with no missteps.  If my plan or coach said two squirts of ketchup, that is what I ate…until I couldn’t stand it anymore.  When I would reach my breaking point (as we all do), I would feel guilty and then that guilt would produce… you guessed it- a feeding frenzy.

This crazy cycle of looking for the perfect set of rules, being unable to follow them perfectly, eating worse than I did before I found the rules, and then repeating the whole thing again kept me miserable for years.  Even when I was losing weight, I was stressed because I knew that one misstep when it came to the rules would land me right back at square one.  Wait… let’s be honest.  It would land me behind  square one because the rebound always left me in a worse place.

The one thing I needed- and resisted for so long was letting go of my obsession with the rules and instead embracing “guidelines with give”.

Here’s the thing about GWG… You concentrate on the BDs (big deals) of weight loss like getting in your protein, veggies, water, and strength training and the rest works itself out.  Rather than avoiding all carbs at night because that is the rule, you discover what works for YOU- carbs in the morning, at dinner, post workout, etc.  It is up to you.  Rather than trying to fit in an hour of training everyday, you stick to your commitment to move each day but have the room to either do a 20-minute strength training circuit, an hour long leisure walk, or simply accumulate steps during your normal day because after all those all count for movement.  In general, you let go of the idea of attaining perfection and embrace a way that allows you to be consistent and in the end you get results and keep your sanity too.

In the video chat, Shira from Mom Beyond Baby and I discuss the “Busy Mom Catch 22” and how to solve it.  We cover why the rigid rules and the whole “intuitive eating” fails most of us, when it comes to weight loss and how to let go of the rules and just live your life in a way that yields results.
