Whether you live for your weekly fitness classes or you drag yourself to the gym out of obligation, cutting the time you spend working out can be the unexpected catalyst to better weight management results. If you never get beyond intending to work out because you can’t imagine how to fit hours of activity into your weekly schedule, rejoice. You don’t have to. You can get results with a fraction of the time you thought you needed.
When it comes to exercising for weight loss or weight maintenance, more exercise is not better- it is just more. Exercising too much can be the exact reason why you find it hard to lose weight or why you instantly (well at least it feels that way) grow out of your jeans with just a few missed visits to the gym.
Here’s why cutting your workout time will supercharge your results:
Reason #1: You will be more consistent than ever when you only need a few minutes each day for your workouts.
The thing about using long workouts to lose weight is that the more you work out, the more you need to work out. Your body adapts. It is wired that way to keep you alive. So while starting to work out may initially produce results, if you keep doing the same thing, the results will stop. Got that part? Ok so let’s talk about how to keep your body changing.
Your body NEEDS a progressive challenge to keep changing. Maybe you started losing weight with just 45 minutes each day. When the results stopped, you needed an hour. It was all fun and games until you needed more time than you could feasibly manage.
At some point you start to have to choose between finishing up that project and spending time with your kids or heading to the gym again to get your workout done. Eventually the workout loses and so do you. Your weight loss stops if you are lucky but in most cases, you gain the weight back.
Reason #2: When you ditch long workouts you lose your HUGE appetite and relentless cravings.
If you have ever started working out to lose weight and all of a sudden felt like Cookie Monster, you know firsthand that your workout regimen will influence your appetite. While you may have heard that you can’t out train poor nutrition (yep you have to eat right to get results), you may not realize that you are out training good nutrition. Did you catch THAT?
Exercising too much guarantees that you KEEP overdoing it with the bread, chips, and cake.
When you exercise too much you literally make it harder to follow through with reasonable eating. Your body responds to a lot of moderately challenging workouts with increased hunger and cravings. This response I pretty much guaranteed because it is a hormonal response. Remember your body is designed to survive. It couldn’t care less about getting fierce for your shorts, bathing suits, and jeans. Your body just wants to continue to exist.
Cutting your time in the gym can help you follow through on your nutrition intentions that are absolutely necessary to get and keep results.
Reason #3: When you embrace efficient exercise you can train like a boss so that your body will look like you work out rather than just being good at working out.
You may feel like you are killing it in your workout but unless you have a superior fitness level, you will not be able to work hard AND work long. If you are working long, you are pacing (even if you are dripping with sweat) and you aren’t giving your body the stimulus that it needs to change in a big way.
When you start using efficient exercise, you don’t need to pace because the workout is done in 20 minutes or less. You will be able to push hard and provide your body the challenge that it needs to change.
The bonus benefit of training this way is that when your body adjusts (remember I told you in my first point that this would happen) and the results stop coming, you can simply increase the challenge of your workout rather than making it longer.
You won’t need to work longer- just harder- to break a plateau and keep the weight loss coming.
Now that you understand exactly how cutting your workout time sets you up for better weight loss results, it is your turn to give those short workouts a try.
But here’s the thing, you can’t just take your long workout and make it shorter and expect it to deliver results.
