When you need a workout that delivers BUT you don’t really have time to work out… try working out DIFFERENTLY. I used to spend HOURS in the gym and make multiple trips there each day because I thought that was what it took to lose weight and stay in shape. But a funny thing happened when I truly didn’t have the time to do that anymore… I found another way. I discovered that workout effectiveness when it comes to weight loss has everything to do with how much work you get done and how much metabolic disturbance you create and nothing at all to do with how much time it takes.
So my friend if you don’t have the time to stick to what you knew to be an effective workout, try some of these tricks to amp up your workouts to get in and out of the gym (or living room) in less time than you spend on social media each day. Yep I went there 😉
Strategy #1: Use challenging weights.
In order to create a metabolic disturbance- stimulus that causes your body to burn more calories- the workout needs to challenge your muscles. You could challenge your muscles using a lighter weight and doing more reps BUT that would take more time. Using challenging weights creates the disturbance you need in a short period of time.
Strategy #2: Alternate between floor-based exercise and standing exercise.
This is a sneaky little trick that I use in my workout design and it will have you huffing and puffing like nobody’s business while literally wondering why it is taking so long for ten minutes to pass. You switch between moves like a squat and a push up to get that heart rate pumping while getting those muscles burning.
Strategy #3: Use combination moves.
The more muscle involved in each move, the more you get done in less time and the more metabolic disturbance you create. Your body will literally be burning more calories for more than a day to recover from the workout. You can combine any two moves that can fit together seamlessly but my two favorite types of combinations for weight loss workouts are combining an upper body and a lower body move and combining two lower body moves. Either of those combinations taxes the cardiovascular system while helping you maintain the muscle that is crucial to keeping a high metabolism.
Now if you put all three of these together into one little workout, you have a fat blasting, muscle maintaining workout that will deliver much like the workouts you will find in my Zero Time Training Solutions manual.
Here’s an example…
OTM Workout #4
For the On the Minute Workouts, do the first exercise for 10 reps then rest for the remainder of the minute. At the top of the minute, do the second exercise. Continue to alternate between the two exercises in this fashion until you have done both exercises 5 times for a total of 10 minutes.
1: Squat Jump & Row
2: Hip Bridge & Chest Press
