The New Year is fast approaching and I have a few very important questions to ask you…
Are you gearing up to make a promise to yourself related to eating better and exercising more?
Are you talking yourself into reigning in the holiday eating to get “serious” about your transformation?
Are you making resolutions, goals, or promises that you made last year but have struggled to attain?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, it is time to consider how you will set yourself up for success this time around. It is time to go against the New Year fitness current that is steadily trying to push you into mindlessly following the latest crash diet and exercise fad. Here’s how you can resist and succeed this year.
Pay attention to your mindset (especially these two little sneaky mindset traps).
If you are starting from a place of desperation and doubt, you have already lost the transformation battle. Assuming that you don’t have any health issues, you don’t NEED to lose a pound. Losing some weight may bring greater physical comfort but all of the other anticipated benefits (more confidence, increased happiness, etc.) can be attained through a shift in mindset long before you lose a pound. Even if you lose all of the weight but fail to address your mindset, you will not be happier or more confident. You will just be lean. Lean DOES NOT equal happy. Now that we have addressed the desperation, let’s address the doubt. “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you are right”. If you are making goals and plans full of thoughts of “maybe and might”, you are short circuiting your potential progress. When you believe that your goal is possible, you are inspired to act to make it happen. When you believe that your goal is possible, you are inspired to act to make it happen. When you don’t really believe that what you want is possible, you give a half-effort and manifest exactly what you believed would happen- failure. Pay attention to your thoughts in order to notice negative patterns and replace them with thoughts that serve you better.
Do just enough exercise- but not too much.
Resist the urge to go bananas with long sessions and two a days this year. Going from inactivity to twice daily workouts is an emotional reaction masked as dedication. The fact is that this erratic behavior will not help you to lose fat and keep it off your frame. Sure you will likely see a large shift in scale weight due to the water (and potential muscle) loss but the price you will pay in increased hunger and cravings, physical exhaustion, and aching joints will soon undermine any progress that you have made. Instead focus on short, intense sessions that you can stick to for the long haul. When your coach gives you a perfectly good program, don’t add to it just for the sake of speeding things up (shameless rant there- shame on me). In most instances, giving in to that temptation will leave you burnt out (at best) or injured (equally as likely).
Go for the simplest nutrition strategy that will give you results.
There are thousands of books on the market that take simple, sustainable nutrition practices and then jazz them up with a sexy spin to make you believe that the program is worthy of a purchase. Cutting way back on processed starches while increasing protein and veggies will produce jaw dropping results. The amazing thing about a simple nutrition approach is that you can do it ANYWHERE. You will be able to eat this way even if you end up at a drive-thru window for dinner.
