In Part I, we talked about the first three reasons why you should STOP asking permission to add food to your transformation nutrition plan. In this blog, we will cover, the final four reasons why you don’t need your coach’s permission.
Reason #4: There are only a few hard and fast rules of transformation and anything that seems like it lies in the gray area probably does.
Do you need to eat in a way that keeps your cravings, hunger, and energy in check? Yep! Do you need to watch your ratio of protein to carbs? Most likely! Will getting in a decent amount of vegetables help you stay fuller longer? For sure! Will drinking enough water help fight against false hunger? Absolutely! Pretty much anything else is highly based on the individual and the only way to discover your unique hard and fast rules is to experiment and then pay attention to how your body responds.
Reason #5: When in doubt… you can always leave it out.
This reason is kind of related to the one about the absolution of responsibility. If you aren’t sure a food will help you, you can always leave it out. If your primary goal is to take steps to ensure your transformation happens as quickly as it possibly can then don’t ask- just skip it. Your coach giving you the OK to eat it doesn’t mean that it won’t affect your progress. Conversely your coach saying “no” doesn’t mean that it would have slowed your progress. The only way to know for sure it to try it and to see what happens. If you don’t want to deal with the possibly negative consequences of eating the food, don’t eat it.
Reason #6: Anything we can’t have, we want even more.
You know how it is. The moment you decide to give up diet Coke, it is EVERYWHERE. It is as if the entire universe is in on the conspiracy to make you drink diet Coke. Now you are in a fierce battle using every ounce of your willpower to resist. Eventually, you lose because willpower is exhaustible. So rather than thinking of an item as off limits, simply choose not to have it right now because you don’t know that it will help you. It may seem like semantics but there is a difference between choosing to leave it out for now and being told you “can’t” have it.
Reason #7: We all have varying degrees of a gambler’s tendency.
We want what we want and we want it to have (or not have) the effect we want it to have. While this is highly illogical, it is true. Even if your coach tells you “no”, you are likely to try it at least once anyway. This tendency to gamble is the same reason that your child (or young relative) will still touch the hot stove after you tell them not to. It is only when they experience the burn that they are motivated to keep their hands away. We adults are not much different than the child touching the hot stove. So why not decide that you will find out for yourself either now or later down the road rather than hoping that your coach will bless your intention to try it out. Now when you try it, you won’t have the associated guilt that comes with doing it even though your coach told you not to and you can even solicit her help in understanding how or when to incorporate this food in your plan based on how your body responds.
